Part 3: Using a Computer Program to Locate Epicenter and Determine Intensity

In this part of the exercise you will use the Virtual Earthquake for locating the epicenter of an earthquake. Once you have located the epicenter, you will determine the earthquake’s intensity using the data you generated locating the epicenter, calculating amplitude, then using the Richter Scale. The exercise is located at:

You need access to a printer, to print out your "Virtual Seismologist Certificate of Completion". It is your proof that you completed the lab. In order to get this certificate, you must make careful measurements throughout the activity. The actual certificate is much larger than the one displayed on the web site.

  1. Click on the Execute button to start the Virtual Earthquake application.
  2. You have a choice of four earthquakes to model. Choose one and click on "Submit Choice" button.
  3. Read the material, follow the instructions, and enter your data as instructed.
  4. At the end of the entire exercise, the program will prompt you for your name (You don’t have to give your last name, but I do need to know it was you who completed the assignment.), your school (Amity Reg. 5 HS), and town and state (Woodbridge, CT). Enter the information, get and print your certificate.
  5. Turn in your certificate (it includes your data and calculations) for credit on this assignment.
